Exploring Belgrade’s biggest market: Kalenić Pijaca

Whenever I go places I love exploring its local markets. The minute I heard of Kalenić Pijaca I couldn’t wait to go. The market is the most famous and biggest one in Belgrade. It’s open from 6AM to 5PM every single day and located on the corner of Njegoševa and Maksim Gorkog street. There are hundreds of stalls and the market is lined with small bakeries, restaurants and small shops.

Kalenić Pijaca offers a great variety of vegetables, fruit, grains, household goods and clothing. We went on a Sunday and the market was buzzling and there were lots of stalls open. Just like at Bajloni Greenmarket, fruit and vegetables at Kalenić Pijaca are definitely cheaper than those found at the supermarkets. There is a price barometer that gives you a rough idea what prices you can expect that I found really neat, have a look at it here.

If you are looking for fresh fruit and vegetables, dried fruit, nuts, grains, homemade spreads and pickled goods then Kalenić Pijaca is the place to go.

Bio Spajz is a also a place that’s worth mentioning. It’s a small health foods store that can be found in a tiny booth at Kalenić Pijaca, lokal 34. They have a great selection of bulk goods, tofu, beverages and natural cosmetics, among heaps more products. While the store is fairly small, it’s definitely worth checking out if you are looking for something in bulk or are keen on grabbing a healthy snack.

It’s worth noting that I went in the early afternoon and I saw a handful of stalls already wrapping up for the day. If you want to take advantage of everything that Kalenić Pijaca has to offer then I would definitely visit the market before 3PM, just to be save 🙂
