This is a quick guide on how to get to Mostar aircraft hangar by foot! The abandoned aircraft hangar is a gigantic and formerly top-secret underground airport hangar. It is hidden in the mountains near the Mostar airport, in a small village called Gnojnice. Josip Tito had fighter planes stationed here during the war that were ready to deploy at any time.
The hangar is a little over an hour of walking away from Old Town and while it isn’t necessarily easy, it can be reached by foot. This post should give you a better idea about the aircraft hangar itself and how it can be reached by foot, should you decided to walk there.
My advice would be to follow the directions via google maps for the majority of the route. While Google maps is sometimes pretty off, it leads you almost directly to the airport hangar if followed correctly.
The first bit of the route takes you through the city where walking is not an issue. Later on you are walking right next to a not so busy highway.
Continue to follow google maps’ directions until you see a sign that indicates that you are leaving Mostar.
I was a little anxious at first as I wasn’t sure if there would be a way to walk any further and after exploring the area a little and getting honked at we discovered there is indeed a way. All you need to do is go down through the bush and follow the road.
There is a relatively clear footpath and walking through it should therefore not be an issue.
After walking alongside the road you reach train tracks that are on the bottom of the hill. While it’s a little tricky, simply walk down the hill and quickly cross the train tracks.
After crossing the train tracks you find yourself at the bottom of the hill and are facing other people’s houses and backyards. Please bear in mind that you are on private property as soon as you walk up the hill and it’s therefore advised to walk briskly.
After this tiny detour, you can continue to follow google maps’ directions and walk safely along the highway.
When you see this sign pointing to Gorica make sure to continue walking straight until you see the aircraft hangar.
If you happen to be driving there then the aircraft hangar is definitely easy to miss. However, if you are indeed walking to the hangar then you really can’t miss it. Depending on which site of the street you are you see a huge paved lot to your left with the hangar visible in the distance.
All you need to do now is follow the paved road until you are right in front of the airport hangar. Locals are actually using the hangar as a shortcut when driving and I would, therefore, be mindful of cars.
Today the hangar is abandoned and in complete darkness with trash and broken glass covering everything. Bear in mind that the airport hangar is not a tourist attraction and one of the only places offering tours to the site appears to be Guest House Taso. While the aircraft hangar is definitely a bit of a mission to get to from Mostar, for the determined and curious, it is definitely worth visiting.
