1. Terassen Cafe

Located in Banjara Hills, near Jubilee Hills, tucked away from all the hustle and bustle lies Terassen Cafe. It’s a small 100% vegan eatery that stole my heart. The menu consists of soups, sandwiches, rice dishes, cakes, ice cream, smoothies, and juices. Danesh, the owner, who has been vegan for years and actually started out making fresh loaves of healthy bread. This then led him to open Terassen Cafe years later. I greatly enjoyed talking to him and learning more about the cafe and being vegan in India.

The first page of Terassen cafe’s menu caught my eye immediately: a slow food joint!

Babe and I ended up sharing the baked potato wedges for 100 and we both ended up getting the Vegani Keema Noodles for 150. These were some of the best potato wedges I ever had and the dips were heavenly. The Vegani Keema Noodles were made with heaps of vegetables and soy granules. While I usually don’t grave soy granules, the combination was divine and exactly what I needed.

I ended up going back for me and everything that I had, was delicious. I highly recommend going to Terassen Cafe, it’s one of my favorite vegan restaurants ever.

2. Aahar Take Away

This small take-away spot is located right off the main street. I must admit, from the outside Aahar Take Away does look a little rough. Their food, however, blew me away. It was incredible! They have quite a few veg options on their menu and I tried the Veg Manchurian Dry half portion for 100 and the Veg Biryani half portion for 100. I ended up having the Veg Biryani half portion several times and the portion was so big, it ended up feeding the both of us!

3. Smart Alec

Smart Alex is a 100% vegan restaurant that’s located in the heart of Jubilee Hills. I initially wasn’t keen on checking it out because their menu consists of moderately priced western cuisine. After quite a few people recommended it to me I caved and gave it a try. The menu consists of sandwiches, soups, pizza, pasta, burgers, salads, and sweets. I ordered the Mexican Burger for 250 and wasn’t overly fond of the patties texture. It may have been fried, of which I am not too fond of.

I decided to include Smart Alec regardless because it’s a 100% vegan restaurant and although I am not in love with what I ordered, you may be. If you like western cuisine, then give Smart Alec a go. If you love supporting places that offer affordable food, unique dishes, and a homey environment then you are better off heading to Terassen Cafe. Terassen Cafe is my absolute favorite place for vegan food in Hyderabad.

4. Hot Kettle

Hot Kettle is a small eatery in Jubilee Hills. While it may look a little rough from the outside, the food is fantastic. The menu is small and only a handful of dishes are vegan. Yet I still highly recommend checking it out, because the food is incredible. I highly recommend going there for breakfast – try the Bharata with vegetable chutney for ₹ 40.

5. Pure

Pure is located inside the Cannoli Cafe as well as at a second location in Hyderabad and offers dairy-free smoothies and juices. Their menu is really interesting and I went for a banana, date, cocoa, and coconut milk smoothie. It was really tasty and super flavourful! If you are craving a healthy smoothie, check out Pure.

I found out too late about this awesome place and didn’t manage to get ice cream from them. I included it on this list despite it, because it was recommended to me by multiple people. Frozera is a small delivery service that’s offering dairy-free ice creams. All their ice creams are made in small batches and they offer a great variety of flavors. Orders can be placed through their facebook page and they offer delivery and pickup. Their price points are super reasonable as well, it’s 220 for 500ml.

Resources that I highly recommend checking out are Hyderabad Vegans, a blog with heaps of useful information, and Hyderabad Vegans, a local facebook group advocating a vegan lifestyle. For a list of bakeries, restaurants, vegan products and cooking at home click here.

The Mexican patty at Smart Alec is pan fried and no deep fried.

Also, Smart Alec is not a western food restaurant. They also serve Asian and Indian food. They modify non vegan food to vegan which is a an innovate, difficult and expensive endeavour and for that it is very moderately priced. Please do not compare it to restaurants that exist to serve a different audience, have a different audience and VERY different (and lower) costs.
